What To Do If Your Air Conditioning Is Leaking

May 14, 2021

When you live in a country that is as hot as Australia often is, the air conditioning in your home is a necessity, and having to go without it can be incredibly frustrating. Whilst keeping cool is the main function of aircon in your building, it also helps keep it ventilated and ensures a consistent airflow.

Over time, it’s likely that your aircon will develop functional issues. This can be for a variety of reasons such as poor maintenance, the air filter accumulating debris that causes it to block, constantly using your air-con and changes in the weather.

When your aircon starts to leak, just like when any other major components in your home start to malfunction, it can be stressful and potentially cause water damage to other parts of your home. If your air conditioning is leaking water, then there are a few steps you can take to fix it.

CLEAN AND REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER

When the air filter in your air-con unit is dirty, air cannot flow through properly which then can cause the evaporator coils to freeze over. Evaporator coils require sufficient airflow in order to absorb heat.

When this process is affected by a blockage, then ice will form and water will begin to leak from the mechanism. You can fix this by cleaning the air filter or purchasing a new one altogether. This should be done every 1-3 months, depending on how much your air-con is being used.

DUST AND CLEAN THE CONDENSATE DRAIN

The condensate drain is where the hot air from your room drains out after being condensed into water. You may find algae, dust, fungi and other debris in your condensate drain. Similarly to the air filter, when it cannot function effectively due to a blockage, it will begin to leak.

Check your condensate drain if your aircon is leaking. If you notice it is mouldy or dirty then use a wet vacuum cleaner to clean out the debris. Following this, you will want to pour distilled vinegar into the drain pipes. Leave the vinegar to soak for around an hour and then use clean water to flush out the vinegar and any grime it has managed to take off with it.

REPLACE THE AIR-CON’S DRAIN PAN

The drain pan catches any condensation from your air conditioning. The pipe connects with your drip pan which then releases the collected water outside. If your air conditioning is leaking it could be due to a cracked or broken drain pan.

There are two different drain pans so you will have to inspect both. You can fix any cracks you find with water sealant, but this solution is only temporary and it’s best you just entirely replace your unit’s drain pan.

CALL A PROFESSIONAL

Sometimes these kinds of domestic mechanisms can be confusing and trying to solve the problem by DIY can make it worse. If your air conditioning is leaking, you can always call a local air conditioning repair service in New South Wales. They will be able to accurately and safely diagnose and fix the issue.

If you notice your air conditioning is leaking, make sure before you carry out any of the above repairs you turn it off to avoid injury.
